A Tapestry of Ornaments

Armenian Khachkars (cross-stones) evolved from the fourth century onward. However, stone carving tradition in the region dates back as early as fifth century B.C. Beginning in the ninth century, the cities of Armenia experienced a dynamic growth in construction of churches. Thousands of Khachkars also appear during this period. By the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the khachkar had reached the zenith of its artistic expression and consisted of such intricately carved geometric patterns as to be compared to embroidery. Our inspiration for the “Tapestry of Ornaments” is derived from this period, ornaments in stone that are as delicate, ornate and elaborate that evokes an intricate embroidery.
